PETALING JAYA : A nagging knee injury has put paid to Wong Pei Tty’s hopes of defending the Indonesian Open women’s doubles title with Chin Eei Hui later this month.
The top Malaysian women’s doubles pair have also withdrawn from the preceding Singapore Open, which will be held from June 15-20.
Doubles coach Chang Kim Wai, who has been tasked with guiding Eei Hui-Pei Tty until the end of the year, said Pei Tty had been struggling with the injury since the All-England in March.
“She was coping with the help of injections during the Uber Cup campaign last month. She can’t bend her right knee now and she has been recommended to go for five injections. She is now confined to doing skills training,” he said.
The decision to scrap their participation in the Singapore and Indonesia legs of the Super Series is a precautionary measure to allow Pei Tty to recover for more important assignments later this year.
Pei Tty-Eei Hui, the world No. 4, are currently the highest ranked non-Chinese pair in women’s doubles and they will be involved in the World Championships in Paris in August.
But their priorities are the Commonwealth Games (October) in New Delhi, where they will be defending the women’s doubles gold medal, and the Guangzhou Asian Games (November), where they hope to secure a first-ever medal.
“There are the Macau and Taiwan Opens before the World Championships. We may enter them to help them get match fit before the world meet. But we’ll have to see Pei Tty’s condition first,” said Kim Wai.
With Eei Hui-Pei Tty out, Malaysia’s title hopes in Singapore and Jakarta will rest on Lee Chong Wei and the top doubles pair of Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong.
Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif have been dropped from the Singapore and Indonesian Opens due to indiscipline problems.
Fairuzizuan had to be restrained when he retaliataed at a fan who swore and used foul language on him during Malaysia’s final Thomas Cup group tie against Japan last month.
However, Fairuzizuan-Zakry will compete in the India Open next week.
