Kien Keat and Boon Heong must deliver in Sudirman Cup

Posted by SEJAHTERA BADMINTON on April 26, 2009

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s hopes of making the semi-finals for the first time in the Sudirman Cup will hinge on the performance of the men’s doubles players.

And Koo Kien Keat is determined to live up to expectations with his partner Tan Boon Heong in the world mixed team event, which will be held in Guangzhou from May 10-17.

Based on the draw released by the World Badminton Federation (BWF) yesterday, fourth seeded Malaysia are in Group A of Division One with top seeds Denmark, South Korea and Hong Kong.

In Group B are Indonesia, defending champions China, England and Japan.

The top two teams will play in the crossover semi-finals.

Fresh: Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong will be playing in their first tournament since winning the Swiss Open in March.

Malaysia’s team will comprise Lee Chong Wei, Kien Keat-Boon Heong, Wong Mew Choo, Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty and Ng Hui Lin. Three others will be named later.

Denmark and South Korea, who boasts of strong doubles combinations, could dash Malaysia’s hopes of making the top four.

Denmark could field either Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen or Mathias Boe-Cartsen Morgensen while South Korea can depend on Lee Yong-dae-Shin Baek-cheol or Hwang Ji-man-Han Sang-hook.

Kien Keat, who is playing in his first tournament after winning the Swiss Open in March, hoped that the men’s doubles pair would be able to win points in every tie.

“We have a tougher draw. It will be a three-pronged challenge in the Group A. Denmark and South Korea have stronger women players,” said Kien Keat.

“The men’s doubles players will have to deliver a sure point to keep the team’s hopes alive,” said Kien Keat.

On paper, world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei should win his matches against Peter-Gade Christensen and Park Sung-hwan of Denmark and South Korea respectively.

Chong Wei, however, has to be wary of Christensen, who has a knack of beating the Malaysian when least expected.

It will be difficult for Malaysia to win the women’s doubles as both Denmark and South Korea have reliable pairs in their ranks. It will be just as tough in the mixed doubles too.

“If we lose, it will put a great pressure on the team. We have to try and win a point,” added Kien Keat.

“South Korea have been fielding many new men’s pairs of late while Denmark will be banking on their regulars.”

On paper, Malaysia’s women’s players are not expected to get the better of their group opponents, although Mew Choo and Eei Hui-Pei Tty have done well in the past.

DIVISION ONE

Group A: Denmark, Malaysia, South Korea, Hong Kong

Group B: Indonesia, China, England, Japan.

Piala Sudirman mulai digelar tahun 1989.

Posted by SEJAHTERA BADMINTON on April 26, 2009

“Saya rasa anak-anak muda kita punya kemampuan.

[Sumber : Kompas.Com]

Tony Most Memorable Moment:
2005 World Championship Final; because no one has ever expected it, including myself. Being an underdog, and also the fact that I am kind of semi-retiree in badminton, winning the World Championship was a very fulfilling personal achievement. I would never dream of playing against my former partner, Candra Wijaya. By the way, rumor said that the betting odd for us winning was 1:20.

2000 Olympics Final; because Olympic happens only once every four years, the gold medal is every athlete’s dream, and it is so damn hard to get. Besides, Candra and I were the number one seed and our country’s hope for the gold medal. The pressure was so enormous and the amount of work I put was not a matter of days; it was more like months of discipline, determination, hard work, hard work, and more hard work.

1996 Indonesia Open; because it was a turning point for my career as I defeated the Unbeatable Duo – Ricky and Rexy in the quarter final (partner with Rudy Wijaya). Late 1994 to 1996 was Ricky/Rexy’s golden era; they were on the winning streak for one and half years. Defeating them boosted up my confidence and made me realize that I had reached the level of top doubles players.

Pei Tty-Eei Hui must protect No. 1 spot to be top seeds in world meet

Posted by SEJAHTERA BADMINTON on April 26, 2009

KUALA LUMPUR: National doubles pair Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui have a tall order ahead of them.

The duo are hoping to go into the history books as the first Malaysian women’s pair to be top seeded for the World Championships in Hyderabad, India, from Aug 10-16.

But for that to happen, they must still be ranked No. 1 in the world when the tournament comes along.

And the only way for them to safeguard their world No. 1 status is by doing well in the Sudirman Cup in Guangzhou (May 10-16) and Singapore Open (June 9-14).

Pei Tty admitted that it would be tough for them to hang on to the world No. 1 spot.

“It doesn’t matter whether we are ranked first or not at the world meet. But the fact remains that we may lose the status if we do not do well in the two coming tournaments,” said Pei Tty.

“There are several pairs just waiting to take over the number one spot from us.”

There are four pairs challenging for the top spot.

They are China’s Cheng Shu-Zhao Yunlei, Taiwan’s Cheng Wen-hsing-Chien Yu-chin, South Koreans Lee Hyo-jung-Lee Kyung-won and China’s Du Jing-Yu Yang.

Pei Tty’s partner Eei Hui, who is making a comeback after taking a one-month break to recover from a back injury, is racing against time to be fit for the Sudirman Cup.

The women shuttlers have a crucial role to play in Malaysia’s bid to justify their fourth seeding in the world mixed team event.

The Malaysian team have never finished better than sixth in Division One of the tournament.

But, for now, Pei Tty is only interested in seeing Eei Hui get back to top form.

“Eei Hui did well in training today and that is a good sign. We will have a better chance if both of us can play as a pair in the Sudirman Cup,” said Pei Tty.

There are three back-up shuttlers – Vivian Hoo, Woon Khe Wei and Ng Hui Lin – waiting in the wings to be paired up with Pei Tty should Eei Hui fail to get the nod.

Besides Eei Hui-Pei Tty, the others confirmed for the Sudirman Cup are Wong Mew Choo, Hui Lin and three men’s players – Lee Chong Wei, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong.

The coaches will name several others before the team leave for Guangzhou next week.
